How a balloon changes repayments
A balloon is an amount left owing at the end of the term. Increasing the balloon generally reduces scheduled repayments during the term because less principal is repaid progressively, but the borrower must deal with the final amount at maturity.
Compare both the monthly repayment and the end-of-term obligation. A lower monthly number can conceal a materially larger final payment.
How the loan term changes cost
A longer term usually reduces each scheduled repayment because the principal is spread over more periods. However, keeping debt outstanding for longer can increase total interest paid, all else equal.
Choose a term that fits cash flow without extending the debt materially beyond the useful ownership period of the vehicle.
Calculator methodology
For a standard amortising loan, calculate periodic repayments using the periodic interest rate and number of repayment periods, with the present value of the balloon discounted back over the term. If fees are financed, add them to the financed principal before calculating repayments.
Replit should display the formula/methodology in an expandable technical note and clearly label results as estimates.
Frequently asked questions
Is the calculator result a finance quote?
No. It is an estimate. Actual repayments depend on lender pricing, fees, approval conditions, payment timing and contract terms.
Does a balloon make the loan cheaper?
It can reduce scheduled repayments during the term, but it leaves more principal outstanding at the end and does not automatically reduce total cost.
Should lender and broker fees be included?
If fees are financed, include them in the amount financed for a more realistic estimate. Some costs may instead be paid upfront.
